Tim Smith -The Soundscape Recording Studio 2009
Introducing Recording, Mixing Engineer Tim "2 Phat" Smith:
Detroit Michigan Musician, Tim Smith, began his passion for music at the
early age of ten years old! Although at the time his interest was drums, he
actually took a brief stab at the Trumpet! By the time Tim entered middle
school, his Trumpet had taken a back seat and eventually ended up on
the used instrument market! "I think it was this point in time where I
became heavily influenced by guys like Tommy Lee, Lars Ulrich, Buddy
Guy and the likes of a few others... "
Needless to say, Tim hit the skins and moved onto taking lessons from a
well known local area drummer by the name of "Haans Muer" (Goober &
The Peas). It wasn't long before his new found love placed him center
stage, only this time it wasn't on the trumpet and oddly enough, it wasn't
on the drums either!
Tim found himself front and center behind the grill of an SM 58
Microphone with fellow band mates "Elusion"! Very quickly it became
evident that "hitting the right key is somewhat important!" His short lived
singing career may have went down in flames but, fronting his first project
brought forth another hidden talent... business management!
As we all know, bands come and go and this one took an exit almost as
quickly as it made it's entrance!
At the age of fourteen Tim began a new project, this time featuring none other then
himself on the drums! Off to a good start the band took the name "Paddle Fish"
and quickly created local noise playing teen venues in the area. To no surprise,
the groups management (Dave Gilbert "The Rockets" & Jack Burningtree "The
Burningtree Band") booked the bands first studio recording session without
hesitation. Several months later, Paddle Fish released their debut record
"Something Fishy", via "Pair Of Jacks Records".
"...We were young kids! Playing big places like The Ritz (The Original Location),
The Center Stage, The I-Rock, The Studio Lounge and Blondies! (The Original
Location)... If it wasn't for guys like Dave & Jack, we never would have gotten that
far..."
Throughout the next couple of years Paddle Fish paddled on and Tim continued to
hone his Music Business Marketing Skills and not before too long took on another
role as the "Talent Buyer" for a local teen nightclub (Chucker's Hall). The group
released yet another collection of recordings, this time appropriately titled
"Dredlochness". Unfortunately, the financial support of Pair Of Jacks Records was
not a participant in this later release.
The recording studio, became a major point of interest for Tim outside of
songwriting, booking venues, playing drums and working the Detroit music scene.
But as we mentioned before, all good things eventually come to an end . That
being said, Paddle Fish made some waves and then each member of the group
went their separate ways.
By this time, the local Detroit music scene was giving birth to some of
todays most prominent national icons of the industry (Kid Rock, Insane
Clown Posse, The Verve Pipe, Eminem and Sponge as well as a few other
greats!
As the story goes, another road was traveled. A new Detroit artist began
to emerge..."Straight Outta Commerce". Tim made a choice to survive in
this music business no matter what kind of cards he was delt! The now,
"no band man" made a strategic move to do it on his own.
"... 2 Phat was my alter ego, my way of continuing to be creative, mind
you, all I knew how to do was play the drums.."
2 Phat & the Family Funktion originally featured Tim on the drums as well
as his first delivery as a "Rhyme Sayer". This quickly turned into a full time
project lasting five full length releases spanning from 1997 to 2005 with a
total of four different line up changes and five full length releases!
Throughout the Family Funktion career, Tim found himself working for a
subsidiary label of TVT Records, "Overture Music". It was here that he
wrote various articles for the popular "Root Canal" magazine as well as
handling Merchandise while touring with Detroit Rap legends "Esham &
Natas".
After his time at Overture Music, Tim built up his own Record label "House
Phunk Records" as a vehicle for releasing the last four Family Funktion
Albums. The groups last full length effort was nominated two years in a
row via the Detroit Music Awards for best new artist as well as production
nominations. It was during this period that Tim realised his higher calling
to the art of capturing music and built the first location of "The
Soundscape Recording Studio" (Ferndale, MI). Shortly there after he
became an active member of The Motor City Music Foundation.
All good things come to an end, right!
Back to his Rock Roots?? No one knows for certain exactly how it happened, but
it was about this time that Tim "2 Phat" Smith found himself in an audition room
with the Detroit based Psychopathic Records artist "Zug Izland". This also marks
the official opening of The Soundscape Recording Studio's present location!
(Royal Oak, MI) The band, up to that time had made some incredible strides and
this alone was enough of a reason for Tim to make the cross over back to a
performing drummer, not too mention the opportunity to work with Platinum
Record Producer Mike P.
The group had everything going for them, short of a new record. This became
the long term issue aside from the revolving door of member changes throughout
the years to come!
It wasn't all bad, playing in front of sold out venues across the United States is a
far cry from disappointment. Tim shared the stage with such acts as "Drowning
Pool", "Buckcherry", "Bone Thugs In Harmony", "I.C.P." "Three Six Mafia" and
countless others! With "2 Phat" performing on the drums, the group performed
two years in a row (2007/2008) at the Psychopathic Records annual "Gathering
Of The Juggalos" three day event, averaging a 15 to 20,000 person attendance!
In 2007, Zug Izland pushed out on their last U.S. Tour to date. The group was
originally scheduled for some 36 dates supporting local rockers "Critical Bill",
when issues arose out west bringing Zug and their crew back home only three
weeks in!
Just a few short years later Tim "2 Phat" Smith began working on his soon to be
released book titled "The Studio Bible" A Guide To Modern Day Recording, Mixing
& Mastering Techniques!
By this time, Tim had gained a great deal of recognition for his work on countless
recordings with local Detroit artist ranging from Rock, Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk &
Metal! Meanwhile, The Soundscape continued to grow and It was very obvious to
Tim that his five year enlistment with Zug Izland was coming to an end.
Before his break from the Toxic Rockers he decided to take this passion of music
to another level and enrolled himself at The Recording Institute of Detroit. Here,
Tim had the great opportunity to study under the former Motown Records Head
Mastering Engineer, Bob Dennis.

In 2009, after his time with the Detroit based Rock Group Zug Izland, Tim
immediately teamed up with former "Bag Of Hammers" co-front man,
"Davey The Werewolf", to begin yet another voyage of evolution
"Digging The Grave". The two have recently finished recording their
debut masterpiece slated for a mid to late 2010 release!
On the other side of the tracks, Recording/ Mixing Engineer Tim Smith
took his musical passion to another direction! Privately Teaching The
Art of Recording, Mixing & Mastering with his "Private Instruction
Course"! He designed this to be challenging while completely up to
date with modern techniques used today. This "Personal Training",
being "one on one" has become a big part of The Soundscape
Recording Studio. After completion, each student begins a 100 Hour
internship giving the opportunity to exercise newly gained skills in a real
world scenario!
Tim's current schedule consist of approximately six students and twenty
five full length releases per year!
